Una Makris, MD, MSc, is a clinical investigator at the North Texas VA Health Care System and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center. As a clinically trained rheumatologist, with a research focus on aging, she is well positioned to investigate important questions that bridge the fields of rheumatology and geriatrics. Her research uses mixed-methods to better understand the impact of back pain in older adults. Her current research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness and implementation of a novel behavioral intervention she developed with and for older adults with comorbid musculoskeletal pain and depressive symptoms. Dr. Makris has published over 40 manuscripts and her research has been supported by VA HSRD, NIA, PCORI and Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF). She serves on several NIH and RRF study sections and has focused much of her efforts towards promoting aging principles among medical/surgical specialists.
