Huiwen Xu, PhD

Huiwen Xu, PhD is a Tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health at University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Xu’s research focuses on aging, long-term care, cancer survivorship, and machine learning. His previous work has examined the hospitalization and emergency department (ED) visits of nursing home residents using national Medicare claims and Minimum Data Set data. More recently, Dr. Xu evaluated the staffing shortage in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was selected as a Pepper Scholar by the UTMB Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) to study cancer rehabilitation in nursing homes. Dr. Xu is also interested in applying machine learning to aging research and has built various supervised and unsupervised machine learning models. He participated in multiple NIH funded projects in cancer survivorship prior to joining UTMB.

Dr. Xu has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in leading medical journals including Lancet, JAMA Oncology, Medical Care, and JAMDA; he coauthored one book chapter and over 80 scientific abstracts. Dr. Xu currently serves on the Executive Committee of AcademyHealth Methods and Data Council, Board of Directors of China Health Policy and Management Society (CHPAMS), and Analytics Core of Cancer and Aging Group. He has served the Advisory Committee of AcademyHealth LTSS Interest Group during 2017-2019. Dr. Xu is an Associate Editor of BMC Health Services Research and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for over 15 scientific journals such as AJPH, JCO, and JAMA Network Open. Dr. Xu received several national or international awards, including the Best Abstract Award from CHPAMS 2021 Annual Symposium, Best Poster Award from Denver Post-Acute Care Conference, Student Volunteer Award from AcademyHealth LTSS Interest Group, etc.
