Research
Research Overview
- Dr. Alison Huang is an internal medicine physician, clinical epidemiologist, and clinical trialist at the University of California San Francisco. Her research focuses on advancing understanding and improving management of the impact of aging on women's health, with an emphasis on genitourinary and postmenopausal health conditions that disproportionately affect older women. She leads a multidisciplinary team of clinical researchers in examining shared factors that underlie relationships between genitourinary syndromes and other aging-related conditions such as cognitive and physical function decline, sleep disorders, and depression. She has designed and led multiple NIH-funded randomized trials that leverage findings from her epidemiological research on urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, urogenital atrophy, and nocturia, with the goal of improving women's health and functioning across the aging spectrum. She directs NIH-funded training programs for early-stage clinical and translational scientists and teaches research methods courses for the UCSF Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics as well as the UCSF Clinical & Translational Science Training Program. With the support of a K24 mentoring award, she mentors early-stage investigators in conducting clinical research on older women's health, genitourinary health, and behavioral and pharmacologic interventions. As a general internist, she provides primary care to adults of all ages in UCSF Health's General Medicine Practice.
