Dr. Kiel is a Senior Scientist in the Marcus Institute for Aging Research Musculoskeletal Research Center at Hebrew SeniorLife, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an Associate Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and Past President of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and past Chair of the Research Committee of the AGS.  He also serves on the NIA Clinical Trials Advisory Panel.   Dr. Kiel conducts research on musculoskeletal diseases affecting older adults who are part of the Framingham Osteoporosis Study, including lifestyle and genetic determinants of osteoporosis and fractures, and sarcopenia.  His current work focuses on the genetics of bone microarchitecture phenotypes, the role of the gut microbiome on skeletal structure, and fracture prediction using HR-pQCT.  He has also performed multiple randomized controlled clinical trials to test the efficacy of treatments for osteoporosis and falls.  Dr. Kiel is one of the core group who created the International Federation of Musculoskeletal Societies (IFMRS) Musculoskeletal Knowledge Portal and leads the Big Data group of the IFMRS.
